Indonesia once again performed brilliantly in international competitions. This amazing performance shown by Indonesia this time was seen in the 2019 World School Debating Championship (WSDC), or the World Inter-School Debate Championship. In the championship which took place in Bangkok, Thailand, 24 July to 1 August 2019, Indonesia won the Best English as Foreign Language (EFL) Speaker award and was named the 5th Best EFL Team.
Indonesia is represented by various high schools in Indonesia, namely Pelita Harapan Kemang Village High School, SMAN 2 South Tangerang, Sutomo Medan High School, British Indonesia Jakarta High School, and SMAN 4 Denpasar. From the representative, the Best EFL Speaker award was won by Joshua Karel Riantoputra, a student of SMA Negeri 2 Tangerang Selatan. The EFL category itself is a category for participating countries which do not make English the main language of their country.
Another achievement for the first time in the last ten years Indonesia was ranked twelve out of 63 participating countries around the world. Indonesia also entered into the top five of the thirty participating countries in the EFL category. After going through eight preliminary rounds, the Indonesian team was able to collect 5 wins with 18 ballots (votes from the judges). Indonesia’s victories are all absolute victories over Chile, Turkey, Slovakia, the UAE and Japan. Three split decision defeats (not absolute) from the United States, Ireland, and Denmark.
With this value, Indonesia advanced to the elimination round of Partial Double Octofinals. In this round, Indonesia defeated the Greek team. In the next elimination round, the Indonesian team got one vote from the jury against the Singapore team, so the Indonesian team entered as an octofinalist.
With this achievement, Indonesia has been named The 5th Best ESL Team. This is the first title won by Indonesia in the history of participation in the WSDC.
Before attending WSDC in Bangkok, the Indonesian debate team had first undergone a Training Camp. They were also included in the 2019 Philippine Debate Open (PDO) event. At the event the Indonesian team succeeded in becoming a semifinalist. The Indonesian team also explored the experience at the 2019 Singapore Open Debate High School and managed to become an octofinalist.
Another event that also enriched the experience of the Indonesian debate team was the opportunity to compete in the Euroasia Debate Championship 2019, an event that brought together national and Asian national debate teams. In this event the Indonesian Team was unbeaten in the preliminary round.
The five debaters or students representing Indonesia in the WSDC event are Cassia Tandiono from Pelita Harapan Kemang Village High School, Joshua Karel Riantoputra from SMAN 2 South Tangerang, Swanny Wijaya from Sutomo Medan High School, Joshua Luke Tandiono from British Indonesia Jakarta High School, and Maria Gracia Primaningtyas from SMAN 4 Denpasar.
