Recently Indonesia participated in the 5th United Nation World Forum Organization (UNWTO) on Gastronomy Tourism 2019 which took place in San Sebastian, Spain on 2-3 May 2019. On this occasion, besides being a participant in the prestigious meeting, Indonesia also at the same time introducing the richness of local culinary which is the main attraction in the event.
UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism 2019 is an arena for Indonesia to present and showcase Indonesian specialties. This year is Indonesia’s third participation this time in the prestigious event. During that time, the exposure presented by the Ministry of Tourism in the prestigious event always attracted many participants.
Chairman of the Ministry of Tourism (Kemenpar) Culinary Development and Expenditure Development Team, Vita Datau, explained that the World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism 2019 was an opportunity for Indonesia to promote and explore the possibility of promotional cooperation in the field of gastronomic tourism. This year is the third year in which the Ministry of Tourism participated in the prestigious event.
Speaking of gastronomic destinations, Indonesia has designated Ubud as a UNWTO standard gastronomic destination. To reach that stage, the Kemenpar Team in collaboration with the Gianyar Local Team of Ubud has completed the report requested by UNWTO, followed by an assessment from UNWTO. Regarding the strategy to make Indonesia as a country that has tourism competitiveness, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya claimed to have a specific strategy to position Indonesian tourism on a world map.
One of the strategies introduced was to work with world institutions that have a reputation, such as UNWTO as the world’s best global endorser. Indonesia’s participation in the 5th UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism 2019 is one of the strategies implemented.
“We must increase the quality of Indonesian tourism to become a global standard. Both in terms of tourism education and management destinations. Because, to compete globally, we must also have global standards, “said Menpar.
Regarding raising Ubud as a UNWTO standard gastronomic destination, the Minister of Tourism said that the Ministry of Tourism and Tourism team in collaboration with the Gianyar Local Team of Ubud had completed the report requested by UNWTO. The next stage is the assessment of UNWTO.
“I believe what we are doing is now a model for other culinary destinations. “Other culinary destinations will also be increased to become destinations with global standards,” said the minister who is known as the digital minister.
