UMM Robotic Team

The proud news now comes from the robotic competition in the United States. The robotic team from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) in East Java won in two categories at the Trinity College Fire Fighting Home Robot Contest at Trinity College Hartford
(TCFFHRC), United States (US), on April 13-15. They triumphed in the Legged Robot category (1st and 2nd place) and Wheeled Robot (2nd place).

The UMM Robotics Team consisted of Ifan Achmadillah Fauzi as a programming designer, Rohmansyah as a hardware assembler, and Ken Dedes Maria Khunty managing mechanical parts. Ifan said, robots whose team design dimensions are small enough to have the advantage of maneuvering and finding sources of fire and then extinguishing them.

“So the advantages of our robot are small so that it is agile and more accurate. Because in extinguishing the fire, (which is assessed) not only extinguishes it, but how the robot does not hit the wall or obstruction, “he said during pickup at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, Banten, last week. The bespectacled man said, the plus is that they make legged robots that have their own challenges in their movements.

They make robots in four months. For two months they focused on design and assembly. Furthermore, after successfully rafting, they are included in the hardest process of programming, which is designing an algorithm to move and what the fire suppression method is.

Ifan said, the robot design is now the result of an evaluation of the competition they participated in, namely they have won first place in the category of Indonesian Fire Extinguisher Robot Contest (KRPAI) in the Indonesian Robot Contest (KRI) held by the Directorate General of Student Learning and Student Affairs (Belmawa) Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristek Dikti).

“We compare it with the one in Indonesia. For the design of a large robot, it always bumps into obstacles. Then we make robots as small as possible, “he said. While Rohmansyah claimed that hardware was the main key of the program and mechanics so that the robot could walk. He said, the current and voltage must be made carefully so that the robot can walk in a labyrinthine room and be able to find sources of fire based on sensors.

After extinguishing the fire, the robot is set to return to the starting point. Robots with the fastest records will come out as winners.

“The reference is based on room temperature. When compared to other different rooms, there is considered to be fire. After that, look for the position of the fire based on the sensor, “he explained.
