Time Magazine recently released the list of Time 100 Next 2019. In that list, the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, who is also the former Gojek boss, Nadiem Makarim, entered as one of the rising stars. The founder of the Gojek startup was placed in the category of leaders with Japanese Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, Costa Rican President Carlos Alvarado Quesada, and other young leaders. In addition to the leader’s category, there are artists, lawyers, phenomenal figures, and inventors.

Nadiem has resigned from Gojek and is now the Minister of Education and Culture in the Jokowi-Ma’ruf Amin cabinet. This position places him in the position to form the future leader of the 16th largest economy in the world, writes TIME.

“Makarim will bring young people, entrepreneurial spirit into the cabinet,” said Brian Harding, Deputy Director of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

According to the Chief Editor and CEO of TIME Edward Felsenthal, when he first published the TIME 100 list of the most influential people in the world (TIME’s 100 Most Influential People) 15 years ago, it was dominated by people who rose through traditional power structures, such as the head of state , CEO of a public company, actor from a large blockbuster film, and leader of a global foundation.

TIME realizes that in the latest developments more and more people do not need these positions to attract international attention. For example, like students in Parkland, Florida, USA who mobilized the movement against gun violence in 2018 and environmental activist Greta Thunberg in 2019.

The causes of this shift vary. Some of them are due to the rise of social media, decreased trust in established institutions, to human biological changes.

“With this problem, we are launching TIME 100 Next, a new list that is part of the ongoing expansion of our flagship TIME 100 franchise,” wrote Felsenthal.

“Although this focus is suitable for younger groups, we intentionally do not have an age limit. Recognition of the increase in influence can begin at any age,” he said.

In addition to the leader category, Time also includes a number of other categories, such as artists, lawyers, phenomena and inventors. US singer Camila Cabello is in the artist category while girl band from South Korea (South Korea) Blackpink is in the phenomenon category.
