One of the nation’s creations developed by creative Indonesian youths has again received an award in the international arena. This time, a game developed by a local developer has won recognition at the Indie Arena Booth Awards, which is part of Gamescom 2020. This event is an exhibition where game developers from around the world gather. The game, called “When the Past was Around”, developed by Mojiken Studio, won the Best Game category at the event held in Germany.
This event is held annually in Cologne, Germany. But due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, some of these events are being held online. The announcement of the winners for the Indie Arena Booth Awards will be held live via Twitch on Saturday (29/8) to coincide with the second day of the Indie Arena Booth. Even though it was almost midnight in Indonesia, the When the Past was Around team was unable to express their joy on social media.
“It’s past 11pm in Indonesia and we cheered when we saw When the Past was Around win the Best Game Award at @IndieArenaBooth. An honor, thank you very much,” wrote the When the Past was Around team in a tweet on their Twitter account.
When the Past was Around beat three other indie games in the Best Game category. The other three nominees are Everspace 2, Garden Story, and Hazel Sky. This game created by illustrator Brigitta Rena has a point-and-click puzzle game format and has a romantic story. The game’s main character is Rena, a 20-year-old woman whose life changes after meeting a character named The Owl.
This game is still in the demo stage available for Windows and macOS and can be tested by downloading it on Steam or itch.io. It’s not yet known when the full version will be released, but from the information on the Steam page, the game will launch in 2020.
With proud news like this, it is hoped that it can become an inspiration for other local developers to be able to do the same thing to make Indonesia proud in the world arena.
